FAQs - Making Your Dealership AI-Ready
Everything you need to know about CarGenius — from getting started to advanced AI features for your dealership.
CarGenius AI is infrastructure that makes your dealership accessible to AI agents and assistants. Car shoppers are increasingly starting their research inside tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, and they're using on-site AI search instead of clicking through inventory pages. CarGenius AI makes sure your dealership is the first-party source those systems pull from, so your inventory, pricing, and expertise show up directly rather than getting filtered through third-party marketplaces. The platform has three parts: an MCP Server that exposes your data to AI agents, an optional on-site AI Search experience for your shoppers, and AI Services that monitor and optimize how your dealership appears across AI-driven search.
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an emerging open standard for how AI agents connect to external data and tools. An MCP Server is the bridge that lets an AI assistant query your dealership directly, your live inventory, pricing, hours, and more, and get back accurate, structured answers. Your dealership needs one because the alternative is leaving AI agents to guess about you from scraped or stale third-party data, or to skip you entirely. With an MCP Server, when a shopper asks an assistant to find a specific vehicle nearby, your store can be the authoritative answer instead of a marketplace listing.
SEO optimizes how you rank in traditional search results pages. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization, sometimes called AEO) optimizes how you're represented in AI-generated answers. Both are largely about influencing systems you don't control and hoping they describe you accurately. CarGenius AI is different because it gives agents a direct, structured connection to your real data rather than trying to shape what they infer about you from the open web. Think of it as the difference between making your website easier to crawl and actually handing the agent a live API to your dealership. We still do GEO/AEO monitoring as part of AI Services, but the MCP Server is the part that changes what's actually possible.
Those marketplaces aggregate inventory from many dealers and own the shopper relationship, you pay them for leads and visibility on their platform, on their terms. CarGenius AI inverts that. Instead of routing shoppers through a third party, we make your own dealership the destination AI agents connect to directly. You own the channel, the data, and the customer relationship. As AI shopping grows, the dealers who've built their own agent-ready infrastructure won't have to keep renting access to their own customers.
CarGenius AI is built on the open MCP standard, so it works with any agent or assistant that supports it. That includes major assistants like Claude and a growing list of AI platforms adopting MCP, as well as your own on-site AI Search. Because we're built on an open standard rather than a single vendor's integration, your dealership's reach expands automatically as more agents adopt MCP.
AI Search replaces the rigid filter-and-scroll experience with natural conversation. A shopper can ask something like "Do you have an AWD SUV under $35k with heated seats?" and get accurate answers grounded in your live inventory, not a generic chatbot response. It understands intent, handles follow-up questions, and guides shoppers toward the right vehicle and toward contacting your store. Because it runs on the same data layer as your MCP Server, the answers stay consistent across both your site and external agents.
Agents see the dealership data you choose to expose, typically live inventory with pricing and specs, plus operational details like location, hours, and available services. The point is to give agents accurate, current information so they represent you correctly. You decide the scope of what's shared (see below).
Yes. You control what data is exposed through your MCP Server and AI Search. To start, we work from the information you already publish publicly on your website, and we only connect to additional systems through integrations you explicitly approve. From there you can scope which fields and categories of information agents can access, and adjust that over time. Nothing is shared by default beyond what's configured for your deployment, and we work with you during onboarding to set those boundaries appropriately for your store.
Setup time depends on your current platforms and how your inventory data is structured, but most dealers can be live relatively quickly once we have access to your inventory feed and website. We handle the heavy lifting of standing up your MCP Server and configuring AI Search; the main variable is integration with your specific vendors. A scoping call will give you a concrete timeline for your setup. For most dealers this is about a week.
CarGenius AI is designed to sit on top of your existing stack, including inventory feeds, your website platform, and CRM/DMS tools, rather than replace any of it. The specifics depend on your current vendors, so we start with a quick scoping conversation to map your setup and confirm the connections. We are adding integrations every month based on demand from our dealers.
No. CarGenius AI is built to layer onto what you already run. AI Search embeds into your existing site, and the MCP Server connects to your current data sources. You don't need to migrate platforms or replace your DMS to get started.
Yes. We'll deploy an MCP Server for any dealer at no cost, you only pay when it's actually used. In other words, you start paying when AI agents are shopping your store directly, which means the infrastructure is already working for you. We also run structured pilots so you can prove out the value before a longer commitment, and we offer live demos against real dealership scenarios. Reach out, and we'll set up a walkthrough tailored to your store.
Yes. Protecting your dealership's data is foundational to how CarGenius AI is built. Data is exposed only through the controlled, scoped connections you configure, and access runs through your MCP Server rather than open scraping. We're happy to walk your team through our security practices in detail during evaluation.
You do. CarGenius AI is built on the principle that the dealership owns its data and its customer relationships; that's the entire premise of the product. We're infrastructure that works on your behalf, not a marketplace that monetizes your customers.
Yes. Because agent access runs through your MCP Server rather than uncontrolled scraping, you get visibility into what's being queried and how your dealership is being accessed. This auditability is one of the core advantages of routing AI access through infrastructure you control versus leaving agents to scrape the open web.
