Can you trust AI when shopping for your next car? And as AI platforms introduce new shopping experiences and commercial partnerships, how do consumers know they're getting the best recommendations?

CarGenius AI co-founder and CEO Corey Lydstone joined host Colum Wood on The AutoGuide Show this week to explore these questions and discuss how AI is transforming automotive shopping for consumers and dealerships.

The conversation covered recent findings from CarGenius AI's research, the emergence of new AI shopping experiences, and the shift toward a future where AI agents can interact directly with dealerships.

Are AI car-shopping recommendations truly unbiased?

One of the central topics was a recent CarGenius AI observation involving ChatGPT's new interactive car-shopping experience.

After asking shoppers questions about their budget, vehicle preferences, and financing plans, ChatGPT generated personalized vehicle recommendations. But in one example, when the shopper selected financing, the vehicle listings linked to Capital One rather than directly to the dealerships selling those cars.

A Capital One advertisement also appeared alongside the results.

While this doesn't establish that paid relationships are influencing organic recommendations, it raises important questions about how AI platforms choose where to direct consumers and how commercial partnerships may shape the shopping experience.

For consumers, the distinction between a vehicle recommendation and the destination they're being directed to is important. For dealers, these choices could have significant implications for their ability to connect directly with shoppers.

AI is making car shopping better, and it's moving fast

The conversation wasn't just about potential concerns.

Corey discussed how quickly AI-powered car shopping is improving, including ChatGPT's new interactive interfaces that ask shoppers targeted questions and help them narrow their choices.

He also shared his personal experience using ChatGPT to research and purchase his own Volvo XC90. Rather than sorting through dozens of search results, AI helped identify a shortlist of vehicles while incorporating information about the dealerships selling them.

This more personalized approach has the potential to make car shopping significantly easier, helping consumers research vehicles, compare options, understand financing, and enter dealerships better prepared.

Bringing car dealers directly into the AI shopping experience

A major theme of the discussion was the future of agentic commerce, where AI moves beyond answering questions to taking actions on behalf of consumers.

Imagine asking your AI assistant to compare service prices at nearby dealerships, find an available appointment, and book it for you. Or having it research inventory, compare trade-in offers, and help you prepare for your next vehicle purchase.

For that future to work, AI agents need a way to interact directly with dealerships.

That's exactly what CarGenius AI is building.

Through our dealer-aligned MCP infrastructure, we're making dealership inventory, vehicle information, and services accessible to AI agents through structured, programmatic interfaces.

Rather than forcing AI agents to navigate websites designed for humans, dealerships can provide the information and tools these agents need to help consumers shop and transact.

Understanding how AI sees your dealership

Corey and Colum also discussed CarGenius AI's research into how dealerships appear in AI-generated recommendations.

Our Dealer AI Visibility Reports analyze how AI platforms recommend dealerships across three important categories: Find, Buy, and Service.

The reports help dealerships understand their visibility in AI search, how their inventory and reputation are represented, and where opportunities exist to improve.

As more consumers turn to AI for automotive research, understanding how AI finds and recommends your dealership is becoming increasingly important.

What's next for AI-powered automotive shopping?

The discussion closed with a broader prediction about the future of the web.

As consumers become accustomed to AI experiences that adapt to their individual needs, traditional websites with fixed navigation and rigid conversion funnels may start to feel outdated.

Instead, AI is beginning to generate personalized interfaces dynamically, giving each user an experience built around what they're actually trying to accomplish.

That evolution has implications well beyond automotive retail, and it's one of the areas we're actively exploring at CarGenius AI.

A big thanks to Colum Wood and the AutoGuide team for having Corey on the show and for a great conversation about where AI-powered car shopping is headed!
