Introducing Dealer AI Visibility Reports

Ask a dealer what they want to know about AI, and you will hear some version of the same question: when shoppers ask AI where to buy a car, does my store come up? We have been working on a way to answer that, and I am excited to share it.

Dealer AI Visibility Reports are public reports that show which dealerships AI assistants actually recommend, brand by brand and metro by metro. The first set covers Toyota dealers across the 25 largest US metro areas, and they are live now.

The short version of why it matters: when a shopper asks an AI assistant where to buy or service a car, the answer is not a page of links. It is a short list of named dealerships. In our Miami measurement, AI answered with actual dealership names 99.6% of the time and named only 3 to 6 dealers per answer. Until now there was no standard way to know whether your store is on that list.

Car shoppers are already asking AI. These reports track which dealers are winning the answers.

What we launched

We publish two kinds of reports for each brand, built from the same measurement:

Your own backyard

Regional Reports - one per metro

The competitive picture for your own backyard.

  • Every dealer in the metro, ranked by measured AI visibility
  • The metro broken into its sub-markets, each with its own leader
  • The specific websites AI leans on when it builds answers about that market

Built on the framework we measure every dealer with

In AI Optimization for Dealers: What Matters we laid out our full framework for dealer AI visibility: what we measure, and what moves it. These national and regional reports are built on that same foundation, the one we use every day to create custom visibility reports for individual dealerships. Now the market-level picture is public.

The methodology, in brief:

Step 1
Real shopper questions, no dealer names

Non-branded Find, Buy, and Service questions like "best Toyota dealer near [city]," asked against ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Google AI Overview, city by city across each metro. The answers reflect who AI brings up on its own.

Step 2
Weighted by real demand

Each city counts toward the metro score in proportion to its actual search demand, so the rankings reflect what shoppers ask, where the shoppers are.

Step 3
Every dealer measured the same way

We record which dealerships each answer names, and in what order, for every confirmed dealer in the metro, with the identical question set. The rankings are directly comparable.

Labeled and refreshed: every report carries its measurement period, and each brand's reports are refreshed on a rolling cycle, roughly every six months, so dealers can see how their visibility moves over time.

What the first reports found

Publishing the market picture only matters if it tells dealers something they did not know. The Toyota reports do. See for yourself: the Toyota National Report covers all 25 metros, and the Miami Regional Report shows what the metro-level picture looks like.

AI already has a favorite

In every one of the 25 biggest metros, AI assistants already have a Toyota dealer they recommend most. The National Report names all 25.

The winners are not who you would expect

In 17 of 25 metros, the AI leader is not the metro's biggest store by review count. And the leaders' average Google rating (4.5 stars) is identical to the field's. Store size and Google ratings do not decide who AI recommends.

AI recommends locally

In 23 of 25 metros, a dealer's share of AI recommendations falls as its distance from the metro's center grows - the strongest single force we measured, ahead of ratings and store size. The typical metro leader sits 8 miles from the city center; the typical store sits 18.

The sources are not what dealers optimize for

Google, Reddit, and DealerRater rank among the ten most-cited sources in all 25 metros; Edmunds, Autotrader, and KBB do not crack the top ten in a single one. And 16 of 25 metro leaders with a Yelp listing sit below 3 stars there, against a 4.5 average on Google, while Yelp feeds AI answers in most markets.

Sales and service have different winners

In 12 of 25 metros, the dealer AI recommends for service is not the one it recommends for buying. Winning the sales conversation does not carry over.

Most markets are still up for grabs

In 18 of 25 metros, the runner-up is within striking distance of the leader, and no leader anywhere holds a dominant share. Today's leaderboard is one that can still be changed.

What your store can learn

1

Are you in the answer?

Whether AI names your store at all when shoppers ask about your brand in your market - how often, and how often you are named first, next to every other dealer there.

2

Who is winning today

Which competitors AI names most, in the metro overall and in each sub-market, so you know who holds the recommendation you want.

3

Where the answers come from

The exact websites that feed AI answers in your market - review sites, forums, and dealer sites - ranked by how often AI cites them.

In Miami, Carfax alone is cited more than twice as often as any dealer's own website, and most of the Reddit threads AI reads come from the region's own communities. Visibility is earned on a specific, knowable list of sources, and the report shows you yours.

When you want the full picture for your store

The public reports measure visibility: who AI names, how often, and where the answers come from. What AI says about your store, the sentiment side of our framework, is where the Custom Dealer Report picks up. My favorite conversations start after a dealer has read their Regional Report, because the next question is always about their own store.

Every month, a Custom Dealer Report runs the questions your buyers ask across the major AI engines and reports how often AI names you versus each competitor, scores your Find, Buy, and Service visibility, measures your sentiment, verifies your marketplace presence, and ranks what to fix by effort and impact. If your store is not where you expected it to be in your Regional Report, the custom report shows why.

No black-box scores

Everything in these reports traces back to real AI answers. The rankings come from recording which stores the engines actually named, question by question, and the source lists come from where those answers pulled their information. The same measurement for every dealer, with the full methodology published at the end of every report.

If you sell or service cars, go find your metro. See who AI names, see where you stand, and if you want the store-level picture, we would love to show you what a custom report looks like for your dealership.

Frequently asked questions

How is AI visibility measured?

We ask ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Google AI Overview the same non-branded questions real shoppers ask about finding, buying, and servicing a car, city by city in each metro, weighted by each city's real search demand. We then record which dealerships the answers name and in what order. No question ever names a dealer, and every dealer in the market is measured the same way, so rankings are directly comparable.

Which brands and markets are covered?

The launch reports cover Toyota dealers across the 25 largest US metro areas, with a National Report and a Regional Report for each metro. Additional brands are in progress and will follow the same structure.

How current is the data?

Every report is labeled with its measurement period. The current reports reflect July 2026 measurements, and each brand's reports are refreshed on a rolling cycle, roughly every six months.

What drives a store's ranking?

AI assistants lean on public signals: reviews and reputation across sites like Google, Yelp, and DealerRater, discussion in local communities like Reddit, the content on the dealer's own website, and whether AI can read the store's inventory. Our post on what matters in AI optimization covers the full framework, and a custom report breaks down which of these are helping or hurting a specific store.
